Floods and landslides in the Philippines leave 12 dead, eight missing
Floods and landslides linked to the southwest monsoon and typhoons Kudjira and Delfin have left at least 12 dead and thousands displaced.
At least 12 people have died and eight are listed as missing in the Philippines after heavy floods and landslides that struck overnight, officials said. The extreme weather followed the combined effects of the southwest monsoon and the tropical typhoons Kudjira and Delfin.
Widespread damage and mass evacuations
Assistant Secretary Lawrence Mina of the Office for Civil Defense reported that 11 people were injured in the disasters. He said the registered causes of death include landslides of soil and rock, fallen trees, electrocution and drowning.
Nearly 586,000 people have been affected across nine regions and 33 provinces, authorities reported, as floodwaters and slope failures cut communities off and damaged property.
Preventive evacuations relocated 4,866 people from high-risk areas in Region I, Region III, Calabarzon and Mimaropa. In total, more than 32,800 people are currently displaced and staying in evacuation centres or with relatives.
Search-and-rescue teams continue operations to find the eight missing people and assist communities hit by landslides. Emergency shelters and relief efforts are being coordinated in the most severely affected areas as authorities monitor weather conditions.
Meteorological services warn that the combined influence of the monsoon and the two typhoons can sustain heavy rain in the coming days, keeping the risk of further flooding and slope failures high.
