West Nile fever: 13 cases confirmed in North Macedonia, 10 hospitalized and three critical
Ministry: 13 confirmed infections nationwide as of July 30, 2026; 10 hospitalized and three in critical condition
The Ministry of Health reported on July 31, 2026 that the epidemiological situation in Gostivar has improved, with a steady decline in people seeking medical help related to mosquito-borne illness.
According to the ministry, as of July 30, 2026 there are 13 confirmed cases of West Nile fever in the country. Ten patients have been admitted to the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Febrile Conditions; three of those hospitalized are in critical condition.
In response to the current epidemiological assessment and professional risk evaluation, the Ministry instructed the Center for Public Health–Skopje to carry out additional terrestrial adulticidal disinsection targeting mosquitoes. The extraordinary treatment was performed during the night as an added preventive measure to reduce the risk of further spread.
Ongoing coordination and public updates
The Ministry said the Institute of Public Health, regional public health centres and health-care institutions remain in continuous coordination. They will notify the public promptly of any new findings and actions taken.
Health authorities reiterated advice to citizens to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to seek medical attention if they develop fever or neurological symptoms. The Ministry will publish further information should case numbers or the clinical situation change.
