1,883 IVF applications in 12 months — 237 for fourth, fifth and sixth attempts

The Health Insurance Fund (FZO) says it received and reviewed a total of 1,883 requests to exercise the right to biomedical assisted fertilization (IVF) during the past 12 months.

Of those requests, 237 concern additional attempts beyond the standard number covered previously. "Of 237 submitted requests, 216 are for a fourth attempt, 17 requests are for a fifth attempt and 4 requests are for a sixth attempt. Behind each of these figures stands a family that has received another chance to continue where previous systemic support had ended," the Fund said in a statement.

Law changes and committee review

The amendments to the Health Insurance Law were published in the Official Gazette No. 144 on 17 July 2025. Following that change, the IVF committee held its first session able to consider requests for fourth, fifth and sixth attempts on 7 August 2025.

For IVF procedures carried out in eight health institutions contracted with the Fund, more than 97.3 million denars were spent in 2025, the Fund reported.

Officials note that the new rule means couples who exhausted earlier rounds of public support can now apply for further funded attempts, and that each request represents an individual family's renewed opportunity to seek parenthood.

The Fund's figures cover requests submitted and examined over the last 12 months, reflecting both the demand for assisted reproduction and the immediate effect of the legal change that expanded eligibility for additional attempts.
