€700,000 Washed Ashore near Kazutsa — Police Seized the Sum
People on the beach collected banknotes on July 28, but the Italian police seized more than €700,000 and handed the speedboat to forensic experts.
More than €700,000 in banknotes floated ashore near Kazutsa in Sicily on July 28, after which local residents began collecting bundles of money from the beach.
Police take action
The Italian police later intervened and seized the money to check its origin. The speedboat from which the bags with money were allegedly thrown has also been seized; the vessel was handed over to forensic experts for examination.
According to Italian authorities, the speedboat, about 5.5 meters long, ran out of fuel near the shore by Kazutsa, west of Marina di Ragusa. On board were three adults from Malta and a thirteen-year-old child.
When the vessel began drifting uncontrollably past the town and help was called, the Italian Coast Guard arrived at the speedboat. The people, in a panic, threw bags of money into the sea, and those that floated ashore began to be collected on the beach.
Local beachgoers gathered as much as they could before the police intervened; according to reports, more than €700,000 was seized while an investigation into the origin was carried out. Sicilian media later published the name of the boat's owner, who claims to have no connection to the money.
