AFA offers Lionel Scaloni a long-term contract through 2030

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has offered head coach Lionel Scaloni a new long-term contract that could keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup. His current deal runs until the end of 2026, and the federation wants to secure continuity at the helm of the national team.

According to the offer, AFA is prepared to propose a contract that lasts until the end of the Copa America in 2028, with an option to extend the agreement through the 2030 World Cup. The proposal would therefore cover the next major continental tournament and potentially the next global finals.

The ultimate choice, however, rests with Scaloni. He has not publicly confirmed whether he will remain as Argentina's coach. The coach recently left open the possibility of staying in charge, saying that the team will try to continue its successful run regardless of whether he is on the touchline.

Scaloni's record and next steps

In July Scaloni confirmed he would fulfil his current contract until the end of the year, after which he would speak with AFA president Claudio Tapia about his future. Scaloni took over the Argentina job in 2018 and has since led the side to Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 World Cup crown and the final of the 2026 World Cup.

AFA’s offer signals a desire for stability after a period of sustained success; any final decision will hinge on Scaloni’s willingness to commit to a multi-year project that could include both Copa America 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
