AHV: Nearly 70,000 kilograms of unsafe food prevented from reaching households
The Agency for Food and Veterinary reports widespread inspections and import controls that stopped tens of tonnes of unsafe food from reaching households.

The Agency for Food and Veterinary (AHV) says nearly 70,000 kilograms of unsafe food were kept out of households between January and August, the agency's head Oliver Milanov reported.
AHV inspectors acted against unsafe products both in domestic circulation and at the border. Imports totaling 21,105 kilograms of unsafe food of non‑animal origin were barred from entry, while consignments containing 122,602 kilograms of food of animal origin were returned to the countries of origin.
Inspections and sanctions
During the same period the agency carried out 74,838 inspection checks covering food trade and imports, as well as controls related to animal health and welfare, including farm visits and checks on the import and transit of live animals.
Operators who fail to meet required standards face financial penalties and can be prevented from continuing their activity. The agency says irresponsible operators dealing in unsafe food often end up with their business suspended.
The AHV highlighted these results on the occasion of World Food Day and reiterated that ensuring safe food is a shared responsibility among authorities, businesses and consumers.
