FVA blocks import of 27,520 kg of UHT milk from Kosovo over elevated aflatoxin

The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) blocked the import of two consignments totalling 27,520 kilograms (27.5 tonnes) of UHT (pasteurised) milk from Kosovo after laboratory tests found aflatoxin levels above the permitted limit.

Two shipments destroyed under veterinary supervision

The milk, which was destined for sale in a domestic supermarket chain, was not released onto the market after the non-compliance was detected at the border. The two consignments were, under the supervision of an official veterinarian, safely destroyed at the Drisla landfill.

"Samples for laboratory testing of the two unsafe consignments of UHT milk were taken as part of the Monitoring programme that the inspection services of the FVA carry out at border crossings for consignments of food of animal origin upon import into the country," the Agency said.

According to the FVA, the checks were performed at the Blace border crossing last week, when the elevated aflatoxin was identified and the import stopped.

The Agency also notes that on 17 July this year it adopted a decision introducing special safety measures for the import of milk, dairy products and products containing condensed milk and milk powder. Those measures strengthened official controls at entry points, including mandatory laboratory testing and conformity checks for quality requirements.

The stated aim of the tightened controls is to ensure that only safe, high-quality products reach the domestic market and to secure fair competition and protection for local producers and consumers.
