Albin Kurti urges agreement to elect president to resolve Kosovo deadlock
Kurti warned early elections would not bring substantive change and called on deputies to secure the 80-member quorum needed for a presidential vote.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti urged political leaders and deputies to reach an agreement to elect a president and end the current political impasse in Kosovo.
Speaking at the first session of the new government, Kurti warned that holding fresh early elections would not bring a substantive change and “would be irresponsible toward the public interest.”
Election of a president in the 120-member Assembly requires a quorum of at least 80 deputies — a threshold Kurti says he does not currently command.
Risk of another early vote
If the standoff persists, Kosovo could again face early parliamentary elections, Kurti said, underlining the need for compromise among parties to avoid renewed political instability.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have asked the Constitutional Court to review the constitutionality of the procedure used to constitute the Assembly and to challenge the election of the speaker of the parliament and his deputies.
The opposition also announced a new request for an assessment of the constitutionality of the government’s election, arguing that some decisions were taken by a parliament that had not been properly constituted.
