Aleksandar Ljaftov: Bulgaria will be our toughest opponent in Sofia
The Group B opener between North Macedonia and Bulgaria is set for September 9 at 18:00 in Arena Sofia; Ljaftov called the match special after four seasons with Hebar.
North Macedonia and Bulgaria open the European Championship tomorrow, September 9, with a Group B match scheduled for 18:00 at Arena Sofia. One of North Macedonia’s most experienced receivers, Aleksandar Ljaftov, called the game particularly special for him and his teammates.
Ljaftov spoke to reporters a few hours after arriving in the Bulgarian capital and recalled his time in Pazardzhik, where he spent four seasons with Hebar and collected several trophies.
"I feel very good on Bulgarian soil — I spent 4 excellent years in Pazardzhik. Yes, it's different to compete with a club and with the national team. Now it's even more special because I will play with the national team. Still, I cannot deny that I had wonderful moments with Hebar — winning all the trophies — the championship, the Cup and the Supercup," Ljaftov said and went on to explain his expectations for the tournament.
Confidence and realism before the opener
"I hope that with our play we can show what we are able to do. Our chances are mostly in our last two matches. The atmosphere in the team is excellent, as in all previous years. We enter the competition with desire and enthusiasm," the North Macedonian added.
"Bulgaria, as hosts, will be the toughest opponent — the hall will be full. We know this Bulgarian team is the world vice-champion. It will not be easier against Poland. We will try to play our volleyball. That is why we are here in any case," Ljaftov stressed.
He also addressed the question of supporters: "I hope and wish there will be Macedonian fans in the hall, but it is unlikely that will happen… Nevertheless, I am sure our closest people will be here and will support us properly," Ljaftov concluded.
