Alen Rustemoski wins historic bronze at European Championships in Sofia
Rustemoski took bronze in the 60 kg category after a split decision defeat in the semifinal to Aider Abduraymov of Ukraine.
Alen Rustemoski added a milestone to North Macedonian boxing on September 24, 2026, when he secured the bronze medal at the European Boxing Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. The result marks one of the highest continental achievements for the country in senior competition.
Rustemoski reached the semifinal in the 60 kg category but was edged out there by Aider Abduraymov of Ukraine, losing by a split judges' decision.
Road to the podium
Earlier in the tournament Rustemoski compiled a string of victories to reach the last four, beating Benik Melkkumijan of Luxembourg 5-0 and William Hewitt of England 4-1 before a 5-0 quarterfinal win over Artur Bazeyan of Armenia.
The semifinal scoreline read Rustemoski – Aider Abduraymov (Ukraine) 1-4, which left the Macedonian boxer with bronze.
Because World Boxing is the umbrella body through which Olympic places are allocated, Rustemoski’s result strengthens his standing as a contender for qualification to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
This bronze is the third senior European Championship medal for independent North Macedonia; Veli Mumin previously won two bronzes at the same level.
