Julián Álvarez weighs Arsenal move as Gyökeres included in talks

29 August 2026 — Arsenal have emerged as a real destination for 26-year-old Julián Álvarez after fresh talks around a high-value move from Atlético Madrid.

Álvarez had been linked with a switch to Barcelona earlier this summer, but Atlético made clear they would not sell the Argentina World Cup winner to the Catalan club. The Madrid side are reportedly prepared to let the forward leave for a fee in excess of £120 million that could open the door to Arsenal.

Negotiations and a possible part-exchange

Sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be pushing the transfer, responding to a request from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who views Álvarez as the striker capable of elevating his squad. Agents close to the player have reportedly been told that Arteta would offer Álvarez a prominent attacking role, and that his arrival could strengthen Arsenal’s chances of a Champions League title.

If negotiations progress, Arsenal could include Viktor Gyökeres as part of the package to lower the cash outlay and make the deal more attractive to Atlético. The deal structure and timing remain unclear while clubs assess options ahead of the summer window’s closing stages.

Any move would represent a major transfer for both clubs: Atlético seeking significant funds or a ready replacement, and Arsenal pursuing the proven international forward as they aim to bolster their title credentials.
