Florida woman accused of faking cancer fundraiser, collected over $40,000
Authorities say Maribet Ellen Jones raised more than $40,000 from over 200 people by falsely claiming she had cancer.
A woman from Bonita Springs, Florida, has been arrested and charged after authorities say she spent two years pretending to have cancer and raised money from more than 200 people.
Maribet Ellen Jones, 51, was taken into custody this week and is facing a grand theft charge, investigators said. Authorities allege she collected in excess of $40,000 through online fundraisers, cash donations and personal checks.
How investigators say the scheme worked
According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, Jones worked as an activities leader in a residential community in the Naples area and used that position to solicit help from neighbors and acquaintances. Investigators say the scheme ran from 2022 through 2024.
To make her story appear credible, Jones allegedly told people her condition was deteriorating and that she was receiving regular therapy. At one point, neighbors reportedly shaved her head believing she was preparing for chemotherapy.
The investigation found the donated funds were used to pay down Jones's personal debts. She has been charged with grand theft for an amount estimated between $20,000 and $100,000.
Authorities continue to investigate and have urged anyone who donated and has information to contact the sheriff's office.
