US Military Tankers Relocate to Bezmer Base Following Sofia Airport Controversy

Eight American military aircraft, primarily designed for mid-air refueling, could soon be relocated to the Bezmer military base. This strategic facility is located approximately 260 kilometers southeast of the Bulgarian capital. The government in Sofia plans to request official approval from the legislature to execute this move, Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated during the annual gathering of Bulgarian ambassadors.

This initiative follows an official request from Washington, which was sent on July 17. The specialized aircraft play a crucial role in providing logistical support for the military operations that the United States is conducting in the Middle East. Previously, their physical presence in Bulgaria sparked strong reactions and serious controversies among the domestic public. The reason for this was the decision of the former government administration, which allowed these military assets to be stationed at the civilian airport in Sofia, completely bypassing the parliamentary consultation procedure.

Due to the significant dissatisfaction of citizens regarding the close proximity of military aircraft to a densely populated urban area, the tankers were withdrawn from the civilian airport during the past month. The head of government clarified to the ambassadors that precisely because of these security and logistical challenges, the allies were offered a more suitable alternative. According to his words, utilizing specialized military facilities is the only correct solution for stationing this type of military equipment.

At the end of his address, Radev once again reaffirmed the country's strategic orientation, emphasizing that Bulgaria remains firmly committed to its obligations toward the European Union and the NATO alliance, dismissing speculations about the existence of foreign spheres of influence.
