Andrea Danailoska: the rider from Ilinden 2023 who returned this year

A photograph of a girl on horseback that went viral during Ilinden 2023 captured a moment many Macedonians still remember: at Mechkin Kamen a 14‑year‑old Andrea Danailoska guided her horse up on its hind legs, creating an image that quickly spread across social media. This year the 17‑year‑old from Zdunje, Gostivar, again rode with the Ilinden procession toward the historic town of Krushevo, keeping the tradition alive.

Moment that made headlines

The striking shot was taken at Mechkin Kamen by photographer Boban Koshinov and became the defining image of the holiday for many. The Ilinden horse procession — this edition held for the 45th time — traditionally set out from Gorno Lisiche in Skopje and traveled several days following the routes of the past toward Krushevo.

Andrea first joined the Kičevo Ilinden horse procession “Bogorodica Prechista” in 2023. Her courage, youth and skill in handling the animals impressed the many onlookers; the scene of the horse rearing was preserved in several photos that later circulated widely.

She has loved horses since childhood and has been receiving professional riding training for several years. For a teenager, Andrea’s ability to communicate with and control different mounts is notable — she has experience riding horses named Zekan and Cura, and this year appeared in photos alongside Barit and Sokol.

Her parents, Natasha and Milosh, are proud of their daughter. On social networks messages poured in: “Bravo Andrea, well done!”, “Andrea ours!”, “A Macedonian pride!”, “Pride of Gostivar!”

Andrea’s return to the procession this year reaffirmed her place among the young riders who help preserve Macedonian tradition and the living memory of Ilinden in the countryside and towns that mark the holiday.
