England and Wales have withdrawn their letters of support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, journalist and insider Rob Harris reported on 03.08.2026. The move makes them the first national associations to step back from backing the incumbent ahead of the next presidential vote.
According to the report, additional European associations are preparing to oppose Infantino’s re-election. FIFA’s presidential election is scheduled for 17 March 2027, a date that now looms larger as support from influential federations erodes.
Pressure inside FIFA
Earlier accounts say several senior FIFA officials, including General Secretary Matijas Grafstrom, have been pressing Infantino to resign. Those officials reportedly believe that, if he does not step down, a no‑confidence motion would be brought against him.
Infantino has led FIFA since February 2016. Before becoming president he worked at UEFA, where he built much of the network and reputation that later supported his rise to the organisation’s top job.
The withdrawal by England and Wales signals a potentially significant realignment ahead of the 2027 contest and increases scrutiny on how many other federations will follow suit in the coming months.
