Arne Slot has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Matthias Jaissle at Saudi giants Al Ahli, according to reporting by Ben Jacobs. The club — twice consecutive winners of the Asian Champions League — have reportedly placed the Dutch coach at the top of their shortlist as they prepare for a possible managerial change.
Al Ahli have not officially confirmed any departure by German coach Matthias Jaissle, but the club is already exploring options should a split occur; Jaissle is widely reported to be close to a move to Newcastle.
What the move would mean
Slot, however, is said not to prioritise a switch to Saudi Arabia. Sources close to the coach indicate he prefers to remain in Europe and to continue working at the highest level there. That preference will be the decisive factor if a lucrative offer arrives.
Slot recently completed a two-year spell as Liverpool manager. In his first season he won the Premier League; in the second season the team failed across all competitions, after which Liverpool thanked him and appointed Andoni Iraola as his successor. Slot was also a serious contender for the Netherlands national team job, but talks reportedly broke down over the length of the proposed contract.
Al Ahli have dominated the Asian Champions League for two seasons, yet they remain some distance from the top of the Saudi Pro League — which would likely be Slot’s primary task if he accepted the job. Media speculation suggests an "indecent" financial package could be offered, a sum described as hard to turn down; whether that will alter Slot’s European ambitions remains uncertain.
