Viktor Gyökeres could leave Arsenal after falling behind Havertz

Arsenal could lose one of their most expensive signings as Viktor Gyökeres grows frustrated with his reduced role at the Emirates.

The Swedish striker, 28, arrived at Arsenal two years ago in a transfer worth around £63.5 million including add-ons, but his standing in the squad is now a long way from what was expected when he signed.

Gyökeres did not entirely live up to the very highest expectations in his first season, yet his numbers were still strong: he scored 14 Premier League goals and 21 in all competitions while Arsenal went on to win the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final.

Interest and early talks

With Kai Havertz currently José Arteta's undisputed first choice at centre-forward, Gyökeres has slipped down the pecking order and is finding it harder to get the minutes he wants. His representatives have begun exploring exit possibilities and have opened preliminary conversations with four clubs, including two major European names—Juventus and Milan—and two Saudi sides, Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad. Those contacts are at an early stage rather than representing concrete offers.

Arsenal are not actively trying to sell Gyökeres at the moment, but that stance could change if the club manage to recruit another high-profile striker during the January transfer window. The Gunners showed last summer they have financial room for major moves when they attempted a high-profile deal involving Vinícius Júnior, and the Brazilian forward Endrick has been mentioned as one possible option—signings that would further open the door to Gyökeres' departure.
