Late strikes decide an even match
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Grimaldo converted a penalty, and Jonathan David doubled the advantage in the 90th minute. Diego Simeone added a third deep into stoppage time to seal the result.
Until those final stages both teams had created several scoring opportunities but neither side managed to finish them, leaving the contest open until the late decisive moments.
The 0:3 scoreline reflected Atletico's superior finish to the match and the impact of the awarded penalty, rather than a one-sided performance throughout the 90 minutes.
With the win Atletico moved to fourth place in the table on 10 points, while Real Sociedad dropped to 12th with seven points.
