The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute when Canadian international Jonathan David scored his first goal for Atletico after joining the club this summer. His strike gave the home side the lead and set the tone for the rest of the match.
Atletico doubled their advantage early in the second half. In the 54th minute Kang In Lee, the club's recent signing from Paris Saint-Germain, finished following an assist from David to make it 2-0.
The home team extended the margin to 3-0 in the 63rd minute when defender Robin Le Normand converted from a corner, and the victory was sealed when Alex Baena added the fourth goal eight minutes before the end of the game.
Manager Diego Simeone will have been encouraged by the display, particularly the impact of the new arrivals, with David and Kang In Lee both directly involved in the scoring. Atletico looked balanced in attack and solid at the back throughout.
Elsewhere, Sevilla recorded a 1-0 away win over Deportivo A Coruña in a match played at the same time.
Earlier coverage also carried a remark from the Nantes camp: "You have the craziest fans in the world!"
