Atletico beat Real 2:1 in Madrid derby at Wanda Metropolitano

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2:1 in the Madrid derby on Sunday at the Wanda Metropolitano. A 53rd-minute penalty from Grimaldo and a second goal by Deivid six minutes later gave Cholo's side control, while Antonio Rüdiger reduced the deficit in the 89th minute.

Match turning points

The match opened slowly but burst into life after halftime. The decisive moment came when Hujsen was penalized for a foul on Simeone and received a red card; Grimaldo converted the spot-kick in the 53rd minute. Atletico pushed on and Deivid extended the lead to 2:0 in the 59th minute.

For long stretches the home team dominated, creating chances and testing the goalkeeper, but Atletico did not find a third goal. Real managed a late response when substitute Rüdiger scored in the 89th minute, but it proved only a consolation.

The result leaves Barcelona six points clear of Real Madrid, while Atletico sit second, five points behind the Catalans after the seventh round of La Liga fixtures.

The defeat increases doubts about José Mourinho's squad as realistic title contenders this season, a narrative that has grown louder after this derby loss.
