Aune Heggebo banned for two matches after hand-scored goal

West Bromwich striker Aune Heggebo has been handed a two-match suspension after the Football Association charged him for an incident in which he scored with his hand during his side's 2-1 win over Norwich City.

FA invokes rule E3.1 after disputed 75th-minute goal

The goal came in the 75th minute when Heggebo converted from close range following a delivery from Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Replays later showed the Norwegian making contact with the ball using his hand, but referee Tim Robinson awarded the goal despite protests from Norwich players.

In the days after the match the FA accused Heggebo of breaching rule E3.1, which requires participants to act in the best interests of the game at all times, and described the incident as a "successful deception of match officials". The charge is the first of its kind since the rule was changed in 2024.

The punishment — a two-game ban — removes Heggebo from West Bromwich's upcoming fixtures and will be registered on his disciplinary record. The club has not released a formal statement on whether it will appeal the sanction.

The incident also sparked a flurry of reaction on social media, with some supporters drawing parallels to Diego Maradona's notorious 1986 'Hand of God' goal as clips of the play circulated online.
