Austria routed 107:72 by Hungary before EuroBasket pre-qualifiers

Austria suffered a heavy defeat in a friendly against Hungary ahead of their meeting with North Macedonia in the second pre-qualifying cycle for EuroBasket 2029.

The match, played on Hungary’s home court, finished 107:72 in favor of Hungary. The result came on 23.08.2026 and served as one of the last tune-up games before the start of the new qualifying phase.

Absences and preparations

Austria competed without its regular starting backcourt; the team announced that those players are due to join the squad tomorrow when preparations officially begin. The absence of the backcourt was visible as Hungary pulled away early and extended the margin throughout the game.

North Macedonia’s national team is scheduled to hold its first preparatory gathering tomorrow as well, ahead of the head-to-head meeting with Austria on 30 August. Both camps expect to finalise their rosters and set tactical plans during the coming days.

The friendly confirmed Hungary’s scoring depth and provided Austria with issues to solve before the pre-qualifying opener, where both teams will aim for a fast start in the race to EuroBasket 2029.
