Bus with about 90 students hits rock on Mojkovac–Kolasin road; five injured

Last night in Montenegro a bus carrying about 90 students returning from an excursion collided with a rock on the Mojkovac–Kolasin main road. Emergency services treated five people for injuries; one of them sustained serious wounds.

How the crash happened

According to initial reports, material from the surrounding slope slid onto the carriageway. The bus driver attempted to avoid the debris, but the front-right section of the vehicle struck a rock.

The most seriously injured was the trip leader/driver, who suffered a pelvic fracture and an injury to a vertebra of the spine. Because of the severity of his injuries, he was urgently transferred to the Clinical Center of Montenegro. The other injured were initially treated at the hospital in Bijelo Polje.

Among the four people with lighter injuries were three students from Podgorica. After the accident some pupils were taken toward Podgorica by private carriers, while the remaining students were provided with another bus from the agency that organized the excursion. Several parents arrived at the scene and personally collected their children.

The driver was breath-tested and, according to unofficial police information, was not under the influence of alcohol. The public prosecutor in Bijelo Polje has been notified. Authorities are investigating the circumstances and checking all aspects of the case.
