Car rammed into group of people in Neustadt am Rübenberge near Hanover; several injured

Police in Lower Saxony say a car deliberately drove into a small group of people late on Monday night, October 26, 2026, in Neustadt am Rübenberge near Hanover. Four to five people were injured, some seriously; those wounded were taken to hospital and are not in life‑threatening condition.

Police say officers fired to stop the vehicle

Officers conducting a traffic check near a shooting range in the town witnessed the incident and opened fire at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. The suspects abandoned the car at the scene and fled on foot; an immediate search had not produced any arrests, authorities said.

Investigators reported visible damage at the scene: several other cars had punctured tires, a rear window was smashed and there were bullet marks. The circumstances remain unclear, but police believe the people involved likely knew one another and that the vehicle was driven deliberately toward the group.

“The course of events and the exact role of all participants are still subject to the investigation,” the police spokeswoman said.

A large response of police units, fire crews and emergency medical teams secured the area while a police helicopter and heavily armed units were deployed. The scene was cordoned off to preserve evidence and investigators continue to gather clues.
