Bank of Albania: Deposits safe despite attacks on branches and ATMs
Monetary authorities say financial stability is intact after material damage and temporary branch closures during anti-government unrest in Tirana.

The Bank of Albania has assured the public that citizens' deposits and savings remain secure despite a series of attacks on bank branches and ATMs during anti-government protests.
The central bank said the incidents caused material damage and forced temporary closures at some branches, but added that the stability of the banking system is not threatened by the unrest.
Officials also reported that payment services continued to operate normally even though parts of the banking infrastructure were damaged.
What happened during the unrest
According to the account of events, protesters targeted government buildings while police responded with tear gas and water cannons. Commercial bank branches and ATMs were among the facilities vandalized.
The Bank of Albania stressed that physical damage to premises does not imply that client funds are at risk.
For days Tirana has seen violent demonstrations in which citizens demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama; he will not leave office.
