The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports that, through the "Safe City" system, roughly 11,500 fines were collected over a six-day period, totaling about 8.5 million denars.

According to the ministry, these penalties were issued after sanctioning of vehicles with foreign licence plates began at the Tabanovce border crossing. "The collection of fines is not the primary goal of the system, but saving human lives," the ministry said.

Impact on road safety

Officials point to a concrete drop in traffic fatalities as the most important measure of the system's effect. They note that, up to the end of August last year, 96 fatalities were recorded, while in the same period this year the number fell to 58 victims.

The ministry frames the enforcement at Tabanovce and the wider use of automated monitoring as part of a strategy to reduce risky driving and prevent accidents, not as a revenue-generating measure.

While the figures from the six-day enforcement run show substantial collections, authorities emphasize that continued monitoring and targeted sanctions aim to keep the number of victims on a downward trend.
