Blagica Kaleva, the folk singer who rebuilt her life after a 2002 tragedy
Two decades after the 2002 accident that cost her daughter and husband their lives, Kaleva returned to the stage and still performs today.
More than two decades after a devastating car crash that left her family shattered, Blagica Kaleva remains an active figure on the folk scene and a symbol of personal resilience.
In 2002 Kaleva lost her daughter Viktorija and her husband Kostadin in the traffic accident; she herself was injured. The loss marked her life permanently, but she managed to continue her career despite the pain.
Music as a way back
Two years after the crash, in 2004, Kaleva returned to the stage at Folk Fest Valandovo with the song "Za moite ochi chetiri" and won the festival, a comeback that reintroduced her to the public. She later won again at the same festival in 2018 with the song "Gorda majka", which she dedicated to her younger daughter Marija.
Kaleva has often said that music helped her confront the grief and find the strength to continue. Singing, she believes, became a part of how she rebuilt her daily life and stayed connected to her profession.
She continues to perform and brings emotional songs to audiences; for many listeners her voice remains associated with endurance and the experience of loss transformed into art.
