Todd Boehly sold his entire stake in Chelsea and left Stamford Bridge after four years, and with his exit fresh the club is again the subject of new claims and recollections. One of the more striking revelations to circulate says that when Boehly arrived in London in the summer of 2022 he attempted to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea.
How the proposed Ronaldo move collapsed
At the time Ronaldo was still a Manchester United player and relations between him and his club were reportedly strained. The claim says Boehly went so far as to contact Ronaldo's agent to explore a transfer, but manager Thomas Tuchel ultimately blocked the move.
The headline signing Chelsea made that summer was Raheem Sterling, for whom the club paid €56 million. The episode came amid an active transfer window and a turbulent start to the following season.
Tuchel was dismissed after only seven matches in that campaign, and Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr shortly afterwards. Observers point out that many of the players recruited during Boehly’s tenure failed to make the expected impact, so it remains an open question whether a Ronaldo signing would have changed the club's fortunes.
Whether the story of the attempted deal is true in every detail or will remain one of the many post-departure anecdotes, it adds to the wider debate about Boehly's years at Chelsea and the decisions taken by the club's leadership and coaching staff.
