13.5‑metre pine falls on beach in Crikvenica; eight tourists injured
A 13.5‑metre pine broke at the root and fell on a group of Croatian and Czech tourists; all injured were treated and released.
On August 9, 2026 at about 11:00 a.m. a large pine tree toppled onto beachgoers in front of Hotel "Crikvenica" in the Croatian resort town of Crikvenica, injuring eight people, three of them children.
The tree, reported to be 13.5 metres tall, broke at the root and fell onto a group of tourists. Four of those struck were Croatian citizens and four were Czech citizens.
Immediate aid and medical checks
Witnesses said they first heard a loud cracking noise, after which tourists began screaming and running from the spot. The injured managed to pull themselves clear before emergency services arrived.
All eight suffered minor injuries; they were examined at a hospital in Rijeka and subsequently discharged to go home.
Local authorities announced that they will carry out additional inspections of trees on the beach and other busy public areas in Crikvenica to prevent similar incidents.
