Boris Becker: "My soul hurts, Novak must not continue like this"
Becker says he is deeply pained by Djokovic’s on‑court distress and urges the champion to reconsider his future.
On the fifth day of the US Open the shock of Novak Djokovic's early exit continues to dominate conversation, and several former greats have weighed in — among them Boris Becker.
“My soul hurts, Novak must not continue like this,” Becker said while commenting on matches from Flushing Meadows.
Becker warns about the way the matches ended
Becker made clear he was troubled not only by the result but by the scenes surrounding Djokovic during the match — moments when the world-record holder was seen vomiting or in tears on court.
“Novak must think about the future,” Becker added, saying he has an idea what his former pupil should do but is not ready to reveal it yet.
“I have to think a little more about that. At some point everything ends, but the question is where to do it,” he said.
Becker, who worked with Djokovic for three years, remains among the few figures who know the player closely: during their partnership Djokovic won six major titles.
Djokovic himself has on several occasions said he is struggling with physical problems, but has not disclosed what those problems are.
