Brazil finds oil near Amazon mouth; Lula calls it “a passport for the country’s future”
Petrobras reported oil about 175 km off Amapá; environmentalists warn of ecological risk while Lula frames the discovery as a boost to national future.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed the discovery of oil near the mouth of the Amazon, calling the find “a passport for the country’s future.” The announcement followed a statement from the state oil company Petrobras that it had located oil offshore in the region.
The decision to permit exploratory drilling in an area known as Brazil’s equatorial belt has drawn sharp criticism from environmental groups, who warned that a potential spill could devastate the local ecosystems.
Location, scale and uncertainty
Petrobras reported the find in the sea roughly 175 kilometres off the coast of the state of Amapá. The reservoir was encountered at a depth of 2,886 metres, but it remains unclear how large the deposits are and whether extraction from that depth would be commercially viable.
Environmentalists stressed that the drilling site is in an extremely biodiverse zone. They fear a spill could harm nearby reefs and that ocean currents might carry any leaked oil toward coastal mangroves, which are rich in wildlife and play a key role in coastal protection.
Responding to critics, Lula said the discovery touches on national sovereignty: “This is a question of national sovereignty. No country that has oil of this quality will allow anyone to interfere with it.” He is seeking another four-year term in elections scheduled for October and has stated he remains committed to a gradual phase-out of fossil fuels as part of efforts to limit climate change.
Local authorities say the possibility of oil finds along the coast has already stimulated development in nearby towns. In Oiapoque, in Amapá state, hope for new jobs and opportunities has led to an influx of people. Tensions have surfaced regionally as well: according to reports, Argentina’s leader angered Brazil by calling President Lula a “thief.”
