Death toll from Typhoon Duzhuan in Japan rises to 11, three missing
Authorities say 11 people have died and three remain missing after landslides and floods hit Chiba and surrounding areas.
The death toll from Typhoon Duzhuan in eastern Japan has risen to 11, while three people remain missing, local authorities said.
The body of Akemi Numata, a woman in her eighties from Yokosuka, was found after she had been reported missing following a landslide triggered by the storm.
Rail services were widely disrupted, affecting many passengers; traffic between Chiba and Anegasaki is operating at about 20 percent of its normal capacity.
Damage in Chiba prefecture
Chiba prefectural officials reported that 989 buildings were damaged by the storm, of which 27 were completely destroyed. Flooding and landslides were among the principal causes of destruction across the most affected areas.
Duzhuan was the 25th typhoon of the season. Chiba was hit hard previously by strong storms and floods in August and again in early September, compounding the impact on local communities and infrastructure.
