Bruno Fernandes rejects Manchester United's first contract offer

Manchester United have opened talks to extend Bruno Fernandes' contract, but the midfielder has reportedly turned down the club's first proposal.

Details of the offer and what may come next

United's initial proposal would have increased Fernandes' salary by only £500,000 compared with his current pay, which stands at £19.5 million. It is not clear whether the rejection was due solely to the size of the wage rise or whether Fernandes has set other conditions for signing a long-term deal.

Among the potential demands under discussion are the player's desire to remain in a squad capable of contesting for trophies and specific requests related to transfer policy; those topics are expected to feature in further negotiations.

The midfielder's release clause of £57 million for foreign clubs has expired. Fernandes has been at Manchester United since January 2020, when the club paid €65 million to Sporting (Lisbon) for his transfer.

Last season Fernandes appeared in 37 matches in all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing 22 assists. His current contract runs until the summer of 2027, but it contains a clause that allows the club to unilaterally extend the deal until the summer of 2028, which gives United a relatively favourable position in the talks.

Interest has also come from abroad: Turkish giants Galatasaray are reportedly keen and have been linked with an offer worth €20 million per season for Fernandes. The coming weeks should reveal whether United raise their proposal or whether other offers will push negotiations in a different direction.
