Butel: Mayor orders inspection after pole was cut — inspectors say the resident halted construction and restored the site

Butel Mayor Darko Kostovski announced an inspection after saying a resident in the Skopje North area had illegally cut down a lighting pole to build an awning; this morning he reported inspectors found the site restored.

Inspectors: public property returned to original state

According to Kostovski, the municipality's inspectors visited the location today and confirmed that the space had been returned to its original condition. The mayor had said on Saturday that a local had removed a pole on private initiative and that a criminal complaint and on-site inspection would follow.

“The inspectors from Butel Municipality this morning found that everything has been returned to its original state. Whether reason prevailed or the fear of facing the law, it doesn't matter. What matters is that there is no usurpation and state property has not been damaged. I call for reason and responsibility. State property must not be usurped or damaged. The law applies to everyone and no one will be shown leniency,” Kostovski said.

Photographs Kostovski posted on Facebook show the location in front of a hospitality venue; they also indicate that, after the previous pole was removed, a new lighting support has already been installed to illuminate the space.

The mayor’s early announcement that a criminal report would be filed signalled the municipality's intention to treat the incident as a potential offence against public property. Municipal inspectors nevertheless concluded today that there was no lasting usurpation or visible damage to state assets.

Kostovski urged residents to respect public property and to seek proper permits for any alterations. The municipality will keep monitoring the area to ensure compliance with regulations.
