New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso celebrated a 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the club’s final pre-season friendly, calling his Stamford Bridge debut an emotional moment and looking ahead to the Premier League opener against Fulham. The match took place on 16.08.2026 and served as Chelsea’s last full test before the campaign begins.
Alonso said he was satisfied with the balance of positives and areas to improve after the game, noting that some players had only three days of training behind them yet still managed significant minutes on the pitch. He stressed the coaching staff will use the coming week to fine-tune the squad.
"This was a very good final test for us. For some players it was their first and last match before the season. We saw some really good things, and also some things we can improve, which is completely normal at this stage. It was great to get the whole squad together, some players spent 60 minutes on the pitch after only three days of training. That was our final test. Now we have a whole week to prepare for the match with Fulham, but the feeling in the stadium was really good," Alonso said.
Warm reception at Stamford Bridge
The Spaniard paid particular attention to the reception from the Chelsea supporters and the club’s new staff, describing the atmosphere as a potential driving force for the team. He underlined the importance of building a close relationship between the squad and the fans.
"It was emotional to step into my new home for the first time. We were very well received by the supporters – both the team and the new staff, including me, for which I am extremely happy. We want to build a strong connection and feel that support. Our aim is to show good football so they can energize us and keep us connected. Creating a great atmosphere here, at our stadium, will be a huge boost for the team," the Spaniard concluded.
With the Premier League kick-off approaching, Alonso and his staff will use the final week of preparation to sharpen fitness and tactical details ahead of the trip to Fulham. The friendly win provides momentum, but the manager remained measured about the work still required before competitive fixtures begin.
