14-year-old dies from electric shock during Istanbul floods

A 14-year-old boy died after suffering an electric shock during heavy rains that flooded parts of Istanbul, officials said. The incident occurred in a park in the Fatih district when the boy stepped into a puddle and was electrocuted.

He was taken to hospital unconscious, but "despite attempts to save him, he died," the Istanbul Governor's Office reported. The police have opened an investigation into the case.

The downpour that hit Istanbul inundated roads, underpasses, tunnels, homes and businesses and caused major disruption to traffic. Local authorities closed schools, approved leave for some public-sector employees and urged residents to remain at home.

Emergency response: thousands of reports

The Istanbul Governor's Office said emergency services received 2,518 reports between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Among those were 1,277 reports of flooding, 15 reports of landslides, 47 reports of people trapped, 13 reports of fallen trees and two reports of torn-off roofs. Damage was reported to 76 vehicles, 808 residential buildings and 280 business premises.

Authorities continue clearing streets and assessing structural damage while emergency crews respond to remaining incidents. Residents were asked to follow safety instructions and avoid flooded areas until conditions improve.
