Red fire warning issued across multiple regions of Greece
National civil-protection forces mobilised as red alerts cover Attica, Crete, several Aegean islands and mainland regional units.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection declared a red fire warning for multiple parts of Greece today and ordered the state apparatus into heightened operational readiness because of extreme wildfire risk.
The warning covers the Attica region, including the island of Kythira, and the regional units of Corinth, Argolis, Arcadia and Laconia. A red alert was also issued for Crete and the regional units of Boeotia, Phthiotis and Euboea.
In the northern Aegean the warning applies to the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria, while the Cyclades are under red warning in the southern Aegean.
Activation of the red warning means the national civil-protection mechanism has been placed on full mobilisation, with personnel, equipment and resources allocated to respond rapidly to any outbreaks.
Authorities say the state machine has been put on increased operational readiness to prevent and fight fires across the affected areas.
At the same time, two separate blazes remain active: one near Brnjari and another close to Volkovo.
