Dan Jones picked to continue James Bond with new story "All In"

Historian Dan Jones has been chosen to write a new James Bond story titled "All In" in honour of the National Year of Reading. The announcement makes clear the project will deliberately echo the Bond universe created by Ian Fleming and mark a literary milestone tied to Fleming's earlier work.

Tribute to a 70-year milestone

"All In" is described as a homage to Fleming’s fourth Bond novel, "Diamonds Are Forever", arriving 70 years after that book was published in 1956. The new short novel will place the famous agent in a historical setting rather than the contemporary spy context familiar from the films.

The project was unveiled on 5 October, a date celebrated by fans as "James Bond Day" because the first film about Agent 007, "Dr. No", premiered on that day in 1962. Publishers and organisers timed the reveal to coincide with the anniversary and with national reading initiatives.

According to the announcement, the action of the new adventure finds Bond in Sri Lanka in 1954, during the period when the British were leaving the country. The setting returns the character to an earlier postwar era and connects the story to decolonisation themes.

Dan Jones, known for his narrative histories, takes on the literary duty of extending Fleming’s Bond for this commemorative piece. The new story is positioned as both a celebration of reading and a literary nod to Fleming’s mid-century thrillers.
