Landfill collapse in Conakry kills at least 30 people
A waste heap collapsed onto homes in Conakry’s Dar es Salam after heavy rains; rescuers continue searching amid fears the toll may climb.

At least 30 people have died after a large pile of waste collapsed onto nearby homes in Conakry, Guinea, the government said.
The landslide happened in the Dar es Salam neighbourhood after heavy overnight rains; 22 others were injured, six of them seriously. Authorities warned the death toll could rise.
Search and rescue operation
The government said it had deployed "significant" resources, including the army, to search for survivors and recover victims. The dump reportedly gave way at around two o'clock after midnight, sending massive amounts of rubbish down onto densely built homes.
Rescuers used excavators to comb through the debris while local residents gathered nearby. One woman told local media she had lost her five children in the disaster.
Lansine Sila, a representative of the neighbourhood, told the press: "We recovered 18 bodies that were taken to the morgue." Prime Minister Mamadu Uri Ba visited the site to assess the situation and oversee the search efforts.
