Child hospitalized in Thessaloniki after suspected jackal attack on a Halkidiki beach; federation warns of increasing human–wildlife encounters.
A small child was hospitalized in a Thessaloniki hospital after being injured by a wild animal — most likely a jackal — on a beach in Neos Marmaras, on the second peninsula of Halkidiki. The Hunting Federation for the Macedonia and Thrace region in northern Greece reported the incident and described it as the second similar case in a short period.
The attack occurred a few days ago on the shore at Neos Marmaras. Hospital staff treating the child told the federation that the wounds are consistent with an attack by a jackal.
“The incident is concerning, if it is a jackal, because this species of wild fauna is quite fearful of people,” the Hunting Federation for the Macedonia and Thrace region said.
Recent pattern of encounters
Federation officials added that, in the same wider area, a 55-year-old man was attacked by a wild animal two days earlier and sought medical help for an injury to his neck.
Authorities also recalled that this is not an isolated trend in Halkidiki: in September 2025 a five-year-old girl was attacked by a wolf in the same period of the year.
The Hunting Federation expressed alarm over the recent incident involving the child and urged authorities to implement a comprehensive and coordinated response to the rising number of interactions between wild animals and people across the country.
