Emiliano Martínez says he will return "in a few weeks" after surgery

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez (34) announced he expects to be ready to play "in a few weeks" after undergoing surgery on Saturday for a serious facial injury suffered at the Hill Dickinson stadium in Liverpool.

The veteran Argentine sustained a broken jaw after a collision with Everton defender Džarad Brentvejt during the second half of Chelsea's 2-0 victory. Martínez received on-field treatment for eight minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso later said the goalkeeper had also suffered a concussion following the clash. Club updates described the operation as successful and the medical team as optimistic about Martínez's recovery timeline.

Martínez posted a message on social media alongside a photo from his hospital bed. He wrote: "Thank you all for your messages. The operation was successful."

He added: "The most important thing is that we won and didn't concede a goal. We'll be back in a few weeks." The goalkeeper's statement reassured supporters that he expects a short-term absence before returning to action.
