Jared Kushner, the US envoy and son-in-law of President Donald Trump, will meet today in Cairo with the leadership of the Palestinian militant movement Hamas in the presence of Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish representatives, before travelling to Tel Aviv to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The visit and its immediate context
A Qatari television source described the Cairo meeting as particularly significant after Israel rejected the 15-point plan adopted by the "Peace Committee" and linked any withdrawal from the Gaza Strip to the "real" disarmament of Hamas.
A high-level Hamas delegation led by the head of the movement's political bureau, Kalil al-Hej, arrived in Cairo earlier today; it is his first official visit to Egypt since taking the post.
Kushner's talks in Cairo are expected to focus on the stalled proposals and the conditions Israel has attached to any pullback from Gaza, after which he will continue on to Tel Aviv for the scheduled meeting with Netanyahu.
