James Milner returns to Liverpool to work at the Academy
The retired Premier League appearance record-holder has joined Liverpool Academy to continue his coaching education, initially working with under‑11s.
On 14 September 2026 James Milner returned to Liverpool to begin a new phase of his career off the pitch. The former midfielder, who ended a 24-year playing career as the Premier League's record holder for most appearances, has joined Liverpool Academy to continue his coaching education.
Milner is not a permanent member of the first-team coaching staff; rather, he will be embedded in the club’s academy programme to gain hands-on experience and pass on the knowledge he accumulated during his years at Anfield.
Working with the youngest players
Initially Milner is working with boys up to 11 years old, but the agreement with the club foresees him spending time with older age groups in the coming months. The early role is aimed at giving him practical coaching exposure across different youth levels.
Milner left the professional game only a few months ago yet has moved quickly into coaching. At Liverpool he was part of a team that “won everything” during his playing spell, and now he wants to help shape the next generation of players.
On the qualifications front, Milner already holds a UEFA A licence and is progressing towards the Pro licence required for senior coaching posts. The Academy role will allow him to continue his formal education while working directly with youngsters on the training ground.
