Luka Dončić is taking over the primary role within the Los Angeles Lakers and plans to bring the entire roster to Slovenia for a four-day mini-camp in August.
The shift at the top in LA began even before LeBron James's departure this summer. Dončić, who arrived in a blockbuster player trade in February 2025, had already established himself as an important figure on the team. Until James's departure, he remained a central option in coach JJ Redick's lineup, and together with Austin Reaves formed an extremely efficient offense.
Program and significance
After the departure of the four-time champion, Dončić fully emerged as the leader. He will confirm this position by organizing a four-day mini-camp in Slovenia for the entire Lakers team in August. The travel plan includes training, golf, team gatherings and a tour of Ljubljana.
As a six-time All-NBA selection, Dončić has a crucial season ahead. He was a favorite last year to win the Most Valuable Player award, but his season was cut short by a serious tendon injury in early April.
He missed the playoffs, where the Lakers were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Before the injury, Dončić was playing at a high level and in the 2025/26 season was the league's leading scorer with an average of 33.5 points.
The mini-camp in Slovenia will serve not only as on-court preparation but also as a signal of the team's new way of operating, after Dončić remained the only clear leading figure.
