Drone strikes hit Engels and Saratov refinery, locals report explosions

Drone strikes struck regions inside Russia on August 2, 2026, with reports that an oil refinery in Saratov was hit and that a military airbase near Engels was also targeted, local residents and open-source intelligence channels said.

Residents in Saratov and Engels reported hearing explosions. Footage shared on social media shows thick smoke rising over an industrial area, and preliminary information indicates fires broke out at two separate locations within the Saratov refinery complex.

Targeting of Engels airbase and refinery

Open-source investigators and Ukrainian channels said the attacks were carried out with unmanned aerial vehicles. According to those reports, drones struck the local oil refinery and aimed at the military airbase close to Engels.

According to preliminary reports from OSINT channels, the local oil refinery was hit. Drones also targeted the military airbase near Engels.

There were also reports that civilian infrastructure suffered damage in both towns. Authorities had not issued a comprehensive public statement at the time of the initial reports, and independent verification of the full extent of damage and any casualties was not immediately available.

Videos circulating online show emergency services at the scenes and large plumes of smoke above industrial zones; the situation remained developing as assessments continued.
