Čair stabbing leaves a child fighting for life; detention sought for 19-year-old

The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Skopje has ordered an investigation into a 19-year-old suspect on suspicion of committing the criminal offence of violence under Article 386, paragraph 6 in connection with paragraphs 3 and 1 of the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors say the adult suspect and his underage brother — who is below the age of criminal responsibility — attacked two children and an adult, inflicting serious stab wounds on one child and the adult. A second child suffered lighter injuries.

Incident in Čair

The attack took place on Makedonsko-kosovska brigada street in the Čair municipality. One of the minors, born in 2012, admitted to using a knife, according to the authorities.

One of the stabbed children received a wound to the heart and is in extremely serious condition. Health authorities report the child underwent surgery and remains in intensive care.

Health Minister Sasho Klekovski said: "The child underwent surgery yesterday but has a direct stab wound to the heart; now is in intensive care and in critical condition. Our thoughts are with him but now it is already beyond what medicine can do at the moment."

The public prosecutor has submitted a proposal to the pre-trial judge to impose custody on the 19-year-old suspect. Police investigations and forensic work are continuing as authorities collect evidence and question witnesses.
