Two people rescued alive from hydropower tunnel in Nepal nine days after floods
Rescuers say a 26 August glacier collapse trapped hundreds inside tunnels connected to hydropower plants along the Trishuli River.
Two people have been pulled alive from a tunnel linked to a hydropower plant on the Trishuli River, nine days after the catastrophic floods in Nepal that killed more than 1,200 people.
Authorities and rescuers say they believe a glacier collapse on 26 August trapped at least 900 people inside tunnels connected to six hydropower facilities along the river.
Confirmed toll and missing
So far Nepalese authorities have confirmed 1,259 deaths and report more than 4,200 people missing. In neighboring Tibet, officials say 21 people died and 541 are unaccounted for.
Rescue teams searching the damaged river valleys and blocked access routes have continued to look for survivors amid debris and unstable terrain. The two people pulled from the hydropower tunnel were found alive after extended operations in the area.
Investigators are working to establish the full sequence of events after the glacier collapse and to assess the scale of damage to infrastructure, including several hydropower projects that run along the Trishuli River.
