Two killed as ultralight aircraft crashes over Velebit, Croatia

Two people were killed when an ultralight aircraft crashed in the Velebit area of Croatia after disappearing from radar yesterday afternoon.

Search teams located the wreckage and the victims’ bodies late last night, finding them in a hard-to-reach section of Paklenica National Park at about 22:00.

About 35 members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HSS) took part in the large-scale search operation.

Official statements and flight details

"Our rescuers via radio around 22:00 reported they reached the location and found remains of an ultralight plane and, unfortunately, two bodies were found in the aircraft," said Petar Prpić of the HSS.

Asked whether a strong storm that hit parts of Croatia yesterday could have caused the accident, Prpić said he did not want to speculate on the cause but confirmed that weather conditions had been poor.

Croatian air traffic control earlier said contact was lost with the plane bearing registration D-KWZE, which had been flying from the Czech Republic to Zadar. Contact was lost yesterday at 16:14, roughly 17 nautical miles northeast of Zadar.
