Ruiz's modest ride stole the headlines
Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2:1 in the European Super Cup a few days earlier, claiming their first silverware of the new season, and the squad was back at training preparing for the start of Ligue 1.
Most of the squad — and even manager Luis Enrique — arrived in high-end, luxury vehicles, but Fabián Ruiz turned up in a brand-new Smart, a choice that surprised observers and quickly became the main talking point online.
At first some onlookers wondered whether someone had taken a wrong turn into the training complex, but the Spanish midfielder was soon seen stepping out of the small car. Ruiz, who recently became a World Cup winner with Spain and has collected almost every possible trophy with PSG, has previously spoken publicly about preferring not to spend unnecessarily on luxury items he does not need.
Social networks were quick to react.
