Eddie Howe targeted as candidate to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United

Manchester United are said to be intensifying their search for a new manager as Michael Carrick's position looks increasingly fragile after a run of poor performances and results.

Why Eddie Howe is now being discussed

Several names have been linked to the Old Trafford vacancy — Antonio Conte, Fabian Hurzeler and Unai Emery among them — but Eddie Howe has emerged as a prominent candidate in the latest speculation. Club circles view Howe as a realistic option for several practical reasons.

Unlike Hurzeler and Emery, who are currently committed elsewhere, and Conte, whose strong personality and clear managerial style raise questions about fit inside Manchester United's current structure, Howe is seen as a steadier, more compatible choice.

Howe twice guided Newcastle into the UEFA Champions League and delivered the club’s first major trophy in decades by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025, ending a 56-year wait for silverware. After five years at Newcastle, he stepped down in July to take a break.

Those factors, together with United’s obvious pull as one of English football’s biggest jobs, explain why Howe is attracting widespread backing among figures around the club as they weigh possible successors to Carrick.
